Description: There are so many apps out there, how do I know where ones are good? I know…use an app search engine…….wait there are so many of those as well. I will show you some of the most effective search engines for apps that locate and filter apps to locate ones that address specific deficit areas or need areas for children with disabilities. Then we will explore some of my favorite apps (free or inexpensive) and how they can support your students’ educational, social, organizational and behavioral needs. This will be a fast-paced and fun session.

Description: Literacy apps are a great way to engage students in the 5 Pillars of Literacy — phonemic awareness, phonics, reading fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. With 67% of 4th and 8th grade students falling below proficient in reading comprehension (NAEP 2017 Test Scores), engaging students in literacy is more important than ever. Learn about apps available online and on tablets and practical ways to engage students to improve literacy.

This course will provide an overview of various iPad apps that can be used to facilitate social engagement in early learners. Attendees will learn implementation strategies to enhance a child’s ability to follow basic directions, respond to questions and have successful conversations. Screen time guidelines will also be discussed so that parents and professionals learn how to facilitate language across a variety of apps. The discussion will highlight the latest apps on the market and helpful resources for finding new apps to download.

Mr. Fred Rogers once said, “Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children, play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood.” In this session, we will examine how a set of engaging and open-ended mobile apps can become a play-based and versatile part of any speech and language “toolbox”. Apps shared will come from a variety of categories including those that foster imagination and role play, silly photo filter apps, augmented reality (AR) apps, story creation apps and more. We will discuss creative and “out-of-the-box” ways of using these apps to help our students meet their speech and language goals while having fun.

Incorporating apps into social skills therapy can be difficult for therapists due carry over issues (how to transfer skills learned into real life). Learn how to use apps with evidence based social skills treatment approaches to get the most benefit for your students.

This one-hour implementation class focuses on how to use fun and engaging apps to help an individual learn core words and learn how to put words together on an augmentative/alternative communication (AAC) device. Apps that can be used to target the following language objectives will be reviewed: 1) directing activities with verbs and prepositions, 2) describing with adjectives, and 3) making comments with interjections. In addition, common core standards and extension activities related to these apps and language objectives will be discussed. Direct instruction and app demonstration will be used to cover these principles. This is a beginner to intermediate class for those who are implementing AAC systems. This class is intended for those who work with emerging and intermediate communicators who use AAC.
