For years we have heard the title “family advocate”, “child advocate” and depending on which side of the table you are sitting, this can either be a stressful term, or a sigh of relief.
Our guest today, Catherine Hughes has been on both sides of this table. As a parent of a child with Autism, as well as a Director of family support, Catherine has had an intimate look at what the term “advocacy” really means. And, she is sharing all of her hard-earned knowledge through a number of mediums so that she can help families and professionals worldwide. These exciting channels include social media, her blog, “The Caffeinated Advocate,” as well as her books, training and speaking engagements.
Catherine is here to share her amazing journey with you.
KEY POINTS
- Know that any parent can become an advocate but you have to have a very specific mindset: You’re a resource for information, truly wanting to make the difference for families.
- Be confident in your abilities, well-spoken, and well-written.
- Be a sponge for information – learn from other families as well as other professionals.
