Michael Towey

Mike directs the Speech Language Pathology Department and Voice & Swallowing Center of Maine and The National Center for Telepractice training at Waldo County General Hospital in Belfast, ME. Mike is a Fellow of the American Speech Language Hearing Association and teaches classes in voice and swallowing disorders and telepractice at the University of Maine and Northern Arizona University. He developed and directed the first speech therapy telepractice training program accredited by the American Telemedicine Association and has provided training in the application of telehealth to professionals in major universities and from 44 states and internationally. Mike is the recipient of the Lindamood Award for Clinical Leadership Excellence from California State University and the Lifetime Career Achievement award for distinguished contributions to the profession of Speech Language Pathology by Northern Arizona University Mike is a regular invited presenter at national and international trainings and has written journal articles and chapters about telepractice. He is also an active telemedicine practitioner, providing treatment in voice and swallowing disorders to adults and children internationally He has served as the Co-Chair of the Telerehabilitation Work Group and the Telerehabilitation License Portability Task Force/American Telemedicine Association, the State Medicaid Ad Hoc Committee/American Speech Language Hearing Association and as a member of the Telemedicine Work Group/MaineHealth Mike’s publications include: Speech Therapy Telepractice for Vocal Cord Dysfunction (VCD) (2012), Speech Telepractice: Installing a Speech Therapy Upgrade for the 21st Century (2012), Voice Therapy Telepractice; Voice Care For The 21st Century (2014), Working With A Fortune 500 Company (2007) and book chapters; Speech Telepractice published in Telerehabilitation (Springer) 2012 and Towey, M.
